AUS-8 Steel Explained: Properties, Sharpening, and Best Uses
AUS-8 steel blade material

AUS-8 is a Japanese stainless steel made by Aichi Steel, a member of the Toyota Group. For decades it has been one of the most common blade steels in mid-range production knives, prized for a balance of corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and decent edge retention at a low cost.

AUS-8 Steel Explained: Properties, Sharpening, and Best Uses

AUS-8's fine-grained, high-chromium structure delivers corrosion resistance and easy sharpening at a budget price.

What Is AUS-8?

AUS-8 is a martensitic stainless steel, chemically similar to grades like 440B and 8Cr13MoV. Its composition centers on roughly 13-14.5% chromium for stainless properties, with around 0.7% carbon for hardness and small additions of molybdenum and vanadium to refine grain and improve wear resistance. Because it is a conventional (non-powder) steel, it is inexpensive to produce and forgiving to grind, which is why it appears in so many budget and mid-range folders.

It belongs to the broad family of stainless steels, and the company behind it, Aichi Steel, is one of Japan's major specialty steel producers.

How AUS-8 Performs

  • Corrosion resistance: Excellent for an everyday steel. The high chromium content shrugs off sweat, humidity, and food acids far better than carbon steels or D2.
  • Sharpenability: Very easy to sharpen. AUS-8 takes a keen edge quickly on stones, rods, or even a strop, with no exotic abrasives required.
  • Edge retention: Moderate. It will not outlast premium powder steels like S35VN or M390, but it holds a serviceable edge longer than ultra-soft budget steels.
  • Toughness: Good. The fine grain makes it resistant to chipping, which suits hard-use tasks.

Most manufacturers heat treat AUS-8 to roughly 57-59 HRC, though Artisan's own AUS-8 model, the Dragon ATG-1606, is specified at HRC 59-61.

AUS-8 vs Common Alternatives

Steel Corrosion resistance Edge retention Sharpenability
AUS-8 High Moderate Easy
440B High Moderate Easy
8Cr13MoV High Moderate Easy
D2 Low-moderate High Harder
S35VN High High Moderate

Sharpening AUS-8

Because AUS-8 is not a highly wear-resistant steel, it responds well to standard sharpening practice: a coarse-to-fine progression on water stones or diamond plates, finishing around 1000-2000 grit, followed by light stropping to remove the burr. A 20-degree per side edge is a reliable all-around choice for everyday carry. Avoid overly aggressive pull-through sharpeners, which can gouge the edge bevel on any steel.

Best Uses for AUS-8

AUS-8 is ideal for first knives, everyday carry folders, and fixed blades that see hard use and harsh environments. Its corrosion resistance makes it a strong choice for humid climates, coastal carry, and food-prep duty. If you want a proven, easy-care stainless steel and do not need maximum edge retention, AUS-8 remains one of the most sensible value picks in the industry.
