Keep Your EDC Knife Performing Like New
A well-maintained folding knife is safer, more pleasant to use, and lasts longer. This guide covers three essential skills: cleaning, oiling, and sharpening.

Essential knife maintenance supplies: cleaning tools, oil, and sharpening equipment
Part 1: Cleaning Your Folding Knife
Daily EDC users should clean every 2-4 weeks. Heavy users (cutting tape, cardboard, food) should clean weekly.
Basic Surface Cleaning
- Wipe blade with microfiber cloth after each use.
- Use isopropyl alcohol on a cloth for stubborn residue.
- Compressed air clears pocket lint from pivot and lock mechanism.
Deep Cleaning
When action feels gritty: disassemble carefully (take photos), clean all parts with alcohol and toothbrush, remove old lubricant, reassemble.
Part 2: Oiling Your Knife
Less is more — one drop per pivot side is enough.
- Nano-Oil (10W or 85W): Gold standard for knives. One drop per pivot.
- Mineral oil: Food-safe, inexpensive. Good for budget knives.
- WD-40 Specialist: Good for displacing moisture, not a long-term lube.
Apply one drop to each pivot side, open/close 10-20 times, wipe excess.
Part 3: Sharpening
A sharp knife is safer than a dull one. Three methods for different skill levels:
- Guided system (Work Sharp, Lansky): Best for beginners. Consistent angle. 20 degrees per side.
- Whetstones: Best results with practice. 1000 grit for edge, 3000-5000 for refinement, 8000+ for polish.
- Stropping: Leather strop + compound for quick touch-ups between sharpenings. 10-15 strokes per side.
Maintenance Schedule
| Task | Frequency | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe blade | Every use | 10 sec |
| Clean + oil pivot | Weekly | 5 min |
| Deep clean | 3-6 months | 30 min |
| Strop edge | As needed | 5 min |
| Full sharpen | 3-12 months | 20-45 min |
Common Mistakes
- Over-oiling attracts lint — one drop per pivot side is plenty
- Using too much force when sharpening — let the stone work
- Skipping the strop — regular stropping extends time between full sharpenings
