What Is 12C27 Steel?

Alleima describes 12C27 as its 'most well-rounded knife steel', combining excellent edge performance that allows razor sharpness, high hardness, exceptional toughness, and good corrosion resistance. It is the company's main knife steel for hand-held knives, high-end ice skate blades, and ice drills. The grade has been continuously improved over a period of 45 years, with tighter composition, higher purity, and a fine-carbide microstructure.

According to the manufacturer's datasheet, 12C27 is a simple, clean chromium stainless with nominal composition:

12C27 is rated for a hardness range of 54-61 HRC, which gives manufacturers room to tune the blade for their target balance of edge retention and toughness. In practice most production knives run it in the upper part of that range, and its fine-carbide structure means it takes a very keen edge.

Edge Retention, Toughness, and Corrosion Resistance

The steel's selling point is balance rather than extremes. Its edge retention is very good for the price tier, its toughness is exceptional — the fine, evenly distributed carbides resist chipping — and the 13.5% chromium delivers solid corrosion resistance for a stainless blade. Best Uses for 12C27

Alleima recommends 12C27 for hunting knives, pocket knives, camping knives, high-end chef's knives, and tactical knives. 12C27 is one of the friendlier steels to sharpen.
