Unleashing the Power of S90V
In the world of high-performance cutlery, there are steels that are tough, steels that are stainless, and then there is CPM S90V—a steel that simply refuses to stop cutting. At Artisan Cutlery, we have embraced this legendary "Super Steel" for our Grand Line and Premium Series because we believe in giving our users tools that perform at the highest level.
But what makes S90V so special? And more importantly, why should you choose an Artisan Cutlery knife equipped with it?
The Metallurgy of "Wicked Sharp"
CPM S90V is a martensitic stainless steel manufactured by Crucible Industries using the Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process. This advanced manufacturing technique ensures that the steel's rich alloy mix is distributed evenly, avoiding the brittleness found in traditional steels.
The Secret Ingredient: Vanadium
The magic of S90V lies in its chemistry: 9.0% Vanadium and 2.3% Carbon. When heat-treated properly, these elements form Vanadium Carbides—microscopic crystals that are harder than steel, harder than chromium, and almost as hard as diamonds. These carbides act like tiny teeth on the edge of your blade, allowing it to saw through abrasive materials like cardboard, rope, and carpet long after other knives have gone dull.
Unlike other high-wear steels that rust easily (like M4 or D2), S90V maintains excellent corrosion resistance thanks to its 14% Chromium content. It is the perfect balance of "Workhorse" and "Stainless."
S90V vs. The Competition
How does Artisan Cutlery's S90V stack up against other premium steels you might be considering?
| Steel | Edge Retention | Toughness | Corrosion Resistance | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CPM S90V | 10/10 | 4/10 | 8/10 | Maximum Slicing & EDC |
| M390 / 20CV | 9/10 | 5/10 | 9.5/10 | Corrosive Environments |
| CPM S35VN | 6/10 | 6/10 | 7/10 | General Utility |
| D2 | 5/10 | 3/10 | 2/10 | Budget Hard Use |
Artisan Cutlery's S90V Flagship Models
We don't just use S90V; we optimize it. Our blades are heat-treated to a sweet spot of HRC 60-62 to maximize edge holding without becoming overly brittle. Here are our top picks:
The Satyr
Designer: Chris Ortiz (Cerberus Knives)
Designed for pure slicing performance. The Satyr features a thin, flat-ground S90V blade that glides through material. Paired with a milled titanium handle, it is the epitome of a gentleman's carry with the heart of a beast.
The Holm 1875
Style: Modern Traditional
A fusion of classic Barlow aesthetics and modern tech. The Wharncliffe blade in S90V ensures that the straight edge stays perfectly straight, maximizing utility for draw cuts. Features a secure Button Lock.
The Xcellerator
Designer: Mike Snody
Big, bold, and unstoppable. The Xcellerator uses a thicker stock of S90V (0.15") to provide immense strength. It turns the high-wear capability of S90V into a tactical powerhouse.
The Gambit
Designer: Ray Laconico
The Gambit answers this question. It strikes a different chord than Laconico’s recent work, favoring a linear shape and a slightly wider blade. It feels small in the pocket but deceptively large when deployed—a mid-sized knife that works like a full-sized tool.
User Guide: Living with S90V
Owning an S90V knife is a commitment to performance. To keep your Artisan Cutlery knife functioning at its peak, follow these pro tips:
- Sharpening: Do not use standard aluminum oxide stones. S90V is harder than them. You must use Diamond or CBN stones to sharpen this steel effectively.
- The Finish: S90V loves a "toothy" edge. Finishing your sharpening at 600-800 grit will result in an edge that cuts fibrous materials (like rope) aggressively for a very long time. Mirror polishing is not necessary for performance.
- Usage: While S90V is stainless, keep it clean. Avoid prying or twisting the blade in hard materials, as the high hardness trades off some toughness.
